10 SNES Games Nintendo needs to add to the Switch's library

10 SNES Games Nintendo needs to add to the Switch’s library

There are a few system libraries that are widely regarded as the holy grails when it comes to the massive amount of great games that released on them. While the Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, and Xbox 360 all have a strong argument for that holy grail status, it’s hard to top the amount of amazing tiles that releases on the Super Nintendo. The Japanese console manufacturer just added 20 SNES games to the Nintendo Switch and more are coming in future updates. While there are plenty of classics to play right now, there are even more that are waiting to be added and will cause quite the stir when they get released on Nintendo’s hybrid system. With that in mind, let’s take a look at 10 more SNES games Nintendo needs to add to the Switch’s library.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | ActRaiser

Quintet’s ActRaiser was one of the most unique titles to ever hit the 16-bit platform as it blended city-building with an action game. It’s so original that until earlier this year, nearly 20 years after the original released, we hadn’t even had another game try to perfect that blend. Even the game’s own sequel, 1993’s ActRaiser 2, dropped the city-building aspects to focus on the more traditional action elements. However, with the recently released SolSeraph reminding players how special the original was, there is no better time to put it on Switch.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | Chrono Trigger

Little needs to be said about this one. The 1995 game is arguably Square’s best role-playing game ever, which is quite the accomplishment given how many amazing RPGs it has made over the years. With a fantastic battle system and lack of random encounters, Chrono Trigger has aged spectacularly over the years and is still a total blast to play. It’s not likely that this gets released for free, as it got a retail release on Nintendo DS, but it would still be great to have on the go again.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | Darius Force

Taito made plenty of great games during the ’90s, but Darius Force sticks out as one of the Japanese studio’s finest moments. The horizontal shooter is the fourth game in the Darius franchise, and features three different ships to choose from (two of which are from previous games). Featuring 15 stages, and a branching story that ends with one of three different bosses, this SNES shoot ’em up has plenty of replayability.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | Donkey Kong Country

While the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy hasn’t aged all that gracefully, there is still a ton of value in re-releasing the Rare-developed platformers. A visual spectacle at the time, these games still feature plenty of unique gimmicks for levels and the core gameplay featuring Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong hasn’t lost its luster.

Plus, it’d be another reason for players to pick up the excellent enhanced Switch port of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Considering the great relationship Nintendo has with Rare, even after the sale to Microsoft, it seems like this is just a matter of time.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | Earthbound

This will surely happen at some point because Earthbound is one of the SNES games with the most value in 2019. Its entertaining story filled with great characters and enemies is still fun to experience, and more recent games like Undertale and Citizens of Earth have been clearly inspired by it. The Mother series didn’t get enough recognition upon release, but it is finally getting it now and a Switch version would further help that cause.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | Final Fantasy 6

The second Square developed RPG to make this list, Final Fantasy 6 is arguably the best game in the legendary series. Featuring an emotional storyline and gorgeous pixel art that holds up far better than the early 3D graphics seen in the games that immediately followed it, FF6 is still a joy to play. Even with a lot of competition, this would still be one of the best RPGs available on Switch.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | Lemmings

Before DMA Design created Grand Theft Auto, the developer was best known for their series of Lemmings puzzle-platformers. The games revolve around players helping guide the creatures to safety and creating a safe passage for them. It’s not unlike Nintendo’s own Mario vs. DK series, which clearly took inspiration from them. It’s time to show more Nintendo fans what game did it first.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | Rock n’ Roll Racing

One of Blizzard Entertainment’s earlier titles, Rock n’ Roll Racing is a great racing game. As the title suggests, it also came with an awesome heavy metal soundtrack, or at least as close to heavy metal as the SNES’ sound chip could produce. The racer was later ported to Game Boy Advance in 2003, and it still elicits a lot of nostalgic praise when the name gets brought up around certain people. Seeing how a sequel is not likely, having it on Switch would be a great consolation prize.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | Super Mario RPG

This has always been a tricky game to release due to it being developed by Square rather than Nintendo itself, but it has still managed to have been released on the Wii, Wii U, and the SNES Mini. So, it’s not too far-fetched to believe that we could see Geno and Mallow on Switch, even if they haven’t quite made it to Super Smash Bros. yet. The action RPG served as the inspiration for Paper Mario and the Mario and Luigi series, so its influence is still being seen today.

SNES Games Nintendo Needs on Switch | Super Punch-Out!!

While the Nintendo version is more well known due to the involvement of Mike Tyson, Super Punch-Out!! is just as good. It features some of the system’s best graphics, as the characters are highly detailed, and Little Mac’s boxing encounters are just as memorable. A re-release could be appropriate if it coincided with a port or sequel to the excellent Wii reboot by Next Level Games.
