Tell GR | What’s the scariest moment you’ve faced in a game?

Happy Halloween! In celebration of this spooky day, the Game Revolution team has been discussing the scariest moments we’ve ever experienced in a video game. Whether it be terrifying jump scares or disturbing cutscenes, we recounted our fondest frightening memories below.

But what’s the scariest moment YOU have ever faced in a game? Leave your answers in the comments section, and our favorite response will be featured in tomorrow’s Tell GR!

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “I’m terrified of — though also completely fascinated by — the deep sea. As such, my first port of call when picking up my PSVR headset was to play PlayStation VR Worlds‘ ‘Into the Deep’ mini-game. You’re diving into the depths of the ocean in a shark cage and, unsurprisingly, you come into contact with a shark. I was that pant-wettingly afraid that I tore the headset off my face before I even got to the bit where it starts chewing the apparatus attached to your cage.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I’d say that the most scared I’ve ever been in a game is exploring the west hallway 1F of the RPD in the original Resident Evil 2. It’s the first horror game I ever played, and the eeriness and loneliness of the police station really got me. All the blood and debris really painted a picture of something horrible happening and it still is unsettling to me even now.”

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “Mr. X chasing me in Resident Evil 2 Remake stands out to me, as I hadn’t played the original. I didn’t even know he was in the game! Big surprise when he appeared and started his chase.”

Michael Leri, features editor: “Every second of P.T. is the obvious answer but Resident Evil 4 probably spooked me the most with the first Regenerator scene. I was running along a wall to go through a door in that lab and when I turned (using the tank controls) to go through that door, I saw this hulking monster standing right in front of me. I freaked out and dumped almost all my shotgun rounds into it and basically turned off the game right there and didn’t touch it for weeks. The unexpectedness combined with its long arms and heavy breathing caused a panic I’ve never felt before. I got over it eventually and can play that game without hesitation but there’s still some small amount of paralyzing fear that rests in my brain every time I replay that part.”

Question: What misleading trailer sold you on a disappointing game?

“The Diablo 3 trailer from E3 2013. I was misled into thinking it was going to be a sequel to Diablo 2.”
