hideo kojima movie

Tell GR | Would you watch a Hideo Kojima directed movie?

It’s no secret that Hideo Kojima is a big fan of movies. The guy loves films, and they’ve no doubt been a huge inspiration for the games that he has made. In fact, some might say that his games are often more movie than game, with lengthy cutscenes featuring in both Metal Gear Solid and now Death Stranding. In fact, the latter has a nearly two-hour-long ending sequence, which is longer than most films.

Kojima recently confirmed that his development studio, Kojima Productions, will start making films, saying, “If you can do one thing well, you can do everything well.”

The GameRevolution team has given their thoughts on what they’d like to see from Hideo Kojima and his team. As always, leave your own responses in the comments section, and we’ll feature our favorite reply in the next Tell GR!

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “Kojima and his team are clearly very talented when it comes to giving well-written material to great actors and using motion capture to render them in incredible detail. I’d love to see some animated films from him. I think he could make a really compelling sci-fi story that introduces us to a new world (or multiverse) with different rules to our own. Having a two-hour “bitesize” experience on the same level as Death Stranding could be fantastic.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I kind of feel like I already have. Kojima is famous for his cutscenes, and since MGS he’s taken a cinematic approach to their composition. I’ve loved his games and I’m sure I’ll love his movies. I know he’s a huge cinephile and I’m excited that he’s going to get the opportunity to explore that passion.”

Michael Leri, features editor: “He may be a cinephile with a wide knowledge of film but I’d rather have him in the gaming space. His games always have wonderful cinematography relative to their technology and him switching mediums would be one less filmic game director in the space. Games don’t need to be like movies all the time but knowing how to utilize the strengths of film does help gaming and that’s what Kojima does. Besides, the gameplay is often there to save Kojima as it makes up for how he lacks a good editor and tends to go way up his own ass.”
