Keychron K8 Ultra review

Keychron K8 Ultra 8K Keyboard Review

The Keychron K8 Ultra 8K takes the tried-and-tested tenkeyless layout and gives it a serious performance upgrade. There is an 8,000 Hz polling rate in both wired and 2.4 GHz wireless modes, along with Bluetooth, hot-swappable mechanical switches, ZMK firmware, and the promise of up to 760 hours of battery life. For those who want one keyboard for office work and gaming, on paper the K8 Ultra looks like a strong all-rounder. After testing it for work and play, here is my review.

Easy setup and long battery life

Getting connected is simple through USB-C, 2.4 GHz wireless, or Bluetooth 5.2. Bluetooth supports up to three devices, while the Keychron Launcher web app handles remapping, macros, firmware, and RGB customization without requiring a permanent desktop app.

Keychron claims up to 760 hours of battery life with the lighting turned off. Though I mostly keep my keyboards plugged, I deliberately kept the K8 Ultra in 2.4 GHz wireless mode to see if it could last the full working week and it did so without issue.

The TKL advantage

Keychron K8 Ultra review

The TKL layout remains an easy recommendation for mixed use. It keeps the function row, arrow keys, and navigation cluster, while dropping the number pad to free up desk space. That extra room is useful when gaming, but the keyboard still feels complete enough for writing and general productivity.

Its aluminum upper frame, ABS bottom case, tray-mounted steel plate, screw-in stabilizers, and layered dampening materials give it a premium feel and should help it feel solid on the desk. This is not a complete aluminum case, however, which separates it from Keychron’s more premium Q-series keyboards.

The 8,000 Hz headline

Keychron K8 Ultra review

A big talking point in gaming peripherals is the 8,000 Hz polling rate. The K8 Ultra’s 8K works in both wired and 2.4 GHz modes, which is great to see. Wireless gaming keyboards no longer have to feel like a compromise, and the K8 Ultra is clearly designed around that idea.

With that said, if I am frank, most people are unlikely to notice a dramatic difference between 1,000 Hz and 8,000 Hz in normal use. It is nice to have, and certainly makes the K8 Ultra feel more future-proof, but 8K should not be the only reason to buy this keyboard.

Traditional mechanical switches

Keychron K8 Ultra review

The K8 Ultra uses pre-lubed Keychron Apex mechanical switches rather than magnetic ones. That means there is no Rapid Trigger, adjustable actuation, or analog input, so dedicated competitive gamers may prefer a Hall Effect option.

The upside is flexibility. The board is hot-swappable, allowing users to install a much wider range of linear, tactile, and clicky switches. For those who care more about typing feel and switch choice than magnetic gaming features, that trade-off makes sense.

Final Verdict

At $119.99, the Keychron K8 Ultra 8K combines a practical TKL layout with fast wireless performance, excellent switch flexibility, and potentially outstanding battery life. It lacks the latest Hall Effect gaming features, but for someone who wants a dependable work-and-gaming keyboard with traditional switches, there is plenty to like here.
