Hideo Kojima Worried That His New Game Will Be Seen as “Not That Outstanding”

Hideo Kojima and artist Yoji Shinkawa of Kojima Productions had much to share about their upcoming PS4 console-exclusive game in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu.

As translated by Gematsu, Kojima is nervously excited for his first game since his departure from Konami. He wanted to take a break immediately after leaving, but he said that his "life's tempo would go out of whack[sic]."

While he received multiple offers from publishers to create a game, he doesn't care for the "Hollywood system" and especially "doing detailed presentations." Instead, he wanted someone "who would put their faith in me with just a rough concept," which Sony Interactive Entertainment did, giving him enough freedom to what he wanted without too much oversight.

Kojima believes that his new game will be "amazing," he's worried that fans might be underwhelmed when it is revealed to the public for the first time:

While not to say that it's open-world, users who enjoy today's AAA games (The Division and Uncharted, etc.) will be able to easily enjoy it. When it is announced, you might think 'that's not that outstanding,' but you'll understand when you see it and play it. The genre is action.

While he also wants to incorporate VR somewhere in the game since he believes that "VR holds the key to game development," he admits that he doesn't have anyone on his team yet who can integrate it.

Given that Kojima's game seems to be in a conceptual space right now, we likely won't see his game this year at E3. But that's okay; there's no rush, Kojima-san. I'm sure we'll think the game is outstanding whenever it's ready to be shown.
