“Trial” next to a player’s name indicates that they are playing a trial version of Black Ops Cold War.

For those who haven’t yet bought the latest Call of Duty game, Activision is offering free trials that offer limited access to certain game modes. Players can still level up and earn unlocks, and that progression will carry over if the full-priced version is bought.

At the time of writing, the current free trial period is taking place over the Christmas holiday period. For those getting a new console or PC as a gift, being able to play Call of Duty for free will no doubt be a welcome treat.

Marking trial players in this manner tells other players that they are playing with someone that is relatively new to the game. This could encourage existing players to be more supportive of the newcomer, but it will most likely just single them out as a potential easy target who lacks knowledge of the game and current meta.
