PS4 Sales in Japan Underwhelm in Wake of Tax Hike

PlayStation 4's sales in Japan weren't particularly impressive last week, as Sony's next-gen gaming box only moved a mere 13,401 units.

Here's the full list of last week's hardware sales, courtesy of Media Create:

  • PS Vita – 25,017
  • 3DS LL – 22,947
  • PS4 – 13,401
  • PS3 – 10,871
  • 3DS – 9,091
  • Wii U -7,962
  • PSP – 2,892
  • Vita TV – 1,371
  • Xbox 360 – 276

While PS4's less-than-stellar performance is in part due to a 3 percent tax increase in the region, the fact that Japanese gamers are far more interested in mobile gaming is undoubtedly a factor as well. The home console market just isn't what it used to be in Japan, and with a current lack of software targeted at the Japanese crowd, it's no wonder the box hasn't been flying off store shelves.

On the other hand, Sony can't seem to keep up with the PS4 demand across the rest of the world, as finding a console still has proven to be tricky for gamers in the west. It's a bit ironic, no?
