Komutr Wireless MagSafe Earbuds Review

Komutr Wireless MagSafe Earbuds Review

Outside their case, the Komutr Wireless MagSafe Earbuds might look pretty ordinary, blending into the sea of other black earphones. Draw your eye to the case, however, and you’ll see where the Komutr stands out. The magnetic case is designed to stick to the back of your phone to keep them together at all times. As someone who often misplaces their earphones, I like this idea a lot, but do the earphones inside the case drag the whole product down? Here is my review.

An inspired case

As mentioned in the introduction, the magnetic case is what makes the Komutr stand out. Having a case that can permanently live attached to your phone is an inspired way of taking MagSafe- and Qi2-supported devices and providing additional functionality.

Spotify is probably my most used app, as I’m always listening to music. If I’m grabbing my phone, 80% of the time, it’s to play music while I’m doing work or commuting. Knowing that a pair of earphones is right there waiting for me is excellent and I can see a lot of people appreciating that level of convenience.

I’m less convinced of the idea that it’s easy to lose earphones so the safest bet is to attach them to your phone. On Apple’s side, at least, the official AirPods also support Find My (like Komutr), which allows users to really hone in on the last known location. It’s pretty tough to lose AirPods, though of course it’s even tougher to lose earphones that you know are stuck to the back of your phone.

The case also doubles as a handy stand, propping up your phone whenever needed. This is great when I’m watching videos while commuting on a train, eating lunch with a new episode playing, or washing the dishes. I feel like an always-attached phone stand is a useful thing to have, so it’s a nice bonus of the Komutr.

The downside of the case is the overall thickness that it adds. If you wear roomy trousers or usually carry your phone in a bag, this is not a huge issue. If you are a slim-jeans wearer, though, it becomes a much tougher sell. You are definitely aware of it in your pocket, and that added bulk can make the whole setup feel less neat than the concept first suggests.

What about the earphones?

Komutr Wireless MagSafe Earbuds Review

As for the earbuds themselves, they are fine, but that is about as far as I would go. I wouldn’t say they sound like a $100+ pair of earphones, so the case is clearly where a lot of value is supposed to lie.

With that said, they sound good enough for casual listening, and nothing here sounds actively bad, but I never got the sense that the audio performance was anything special. I never felt wowed.

Noise cancelling is respectable, though, doing enough to take the edge off busier environments. As implied by the name “Komutr,” those commuting and dealing with traffic noise or the hum of a bus or train will find something to like here.

Final Verdict

At $129, the Komutr Earbuds are at their best when viewed as a convenience-first product. The magnetic case is a genuinely smart idea, and for the right buyer, it could be reason enough to choose them. If your main priority is sound quality, there are better options out there. If your main priority is avoiding losing your earbuds in the first place, Komutr makes a stronger argument.
