Dangbei MP1 MAX review

Dangbei MP1 MAX 4K Projector Review

The Dangbei MP1 MAX immediately got my attention with its potential as an all-in-one premium 4K projector. The spec sheet boasts about the bright 4K image, sure, but also the built-in Google TV with working Netflix support, high-quality speakers, and a stand that allows for flexible positioning. In theory, all a user requires for epic 4K movie nights is a screen (or wall) to project onto. On paper, it sounds like a great option for those who want the premium viewing experience, but don’t want to spend hours setting things up. Plug-and-play would be the dream, but can the Dangbei MP1 MAX really offer that? Here is my review.

Big specs

Dangbei MP1 MAX review

For a premium projector like this, it’s important to talk about the technical specs, as they help justify the price tag. First, there’s the triple-laser and LED hybrid light system, which results in an impressively bright 3100 ISO lumens. As you would expect, and as I can confirm, this makes the MP1 MAX usable with daylight coming into the room, though obviously the darker the viewing environment, the better.

Then there’s the 4K output, HDR10+ support, Dolby Audio, DTS Virtual:X, 3D support, automatic focus, keystone correction, obstacle avoidance, AI brightness adjustment, and more.

Easy does it

The projector’s included dual 12W speakers pack a bigger punch than I was expecting, though I would still opt for a dedicated soundbar or surround sound setup when possible. But for those who want an all-in-one solution, the built-in audio more than gets the job done and is louder than anticipated.

With a built-in stand that allows for generous rotation and tilt, positioning and repositioning the MP1 MAX is made super easy.

Setup wins and a loss

Dangbei MP1 MAX review

Setup is both this projector’s greatest strength and weakness. Getting started is incredibly simple thanks to the versatile built-in stand and the arsenal of software assistance. With autofocus and keystone, it’s tough to go wrong. Having Netflix easily accessible, as well as Prime Video, Disney+ and other popular apps through Google TV with zero headaches, is also a win. Then, the built-in speakers do a good enough job so that you don’t have to worry about immediately upgrading them.

What makes setup a bit of a headache is the out-of-the-box colors. Despite touting an impressive color gamut on the spec sheet, the default color profiles are all too vivid. I have to imagine the vast majority of users buying this premium projector would prefer a natural image, and so they will have to spend a bit of time tweaking things. By default, it doesn’t look great, but you can definitely make it look 100 times better with some fine-tuning.

Worth the effort

Once the colors have been tamed, the MP1 MAX delivers a brilliant 4K image. It is crisp and clear with a brightness that ensures colors are protected against the usual washout issues that can plague projectors with a lower brightness output.

Final Verdict

At $1,999, though currently discounted to $1,459, the Dangbei MP1 MAX is a strong premium 4K projector that largely delivers on its all-in-one promise. It is bright, sharp, easy to position, and packed with useful features, though the default color settings do need some attention. It may not be perfect for every setup or every gamer, but once dialed in, it offers an impressive and convenient big-screen experience.
