Sailing the seven seas in Sea of Thieves can be a hectic experience. Griefers, angry chickens and legions and legions of pirate ships are ready to send you to a watery grave. What if there was another way? Is Sea of Thieves online only? Can you play solo offline? Read on to find it, me mateys!
Is Sea of Thieves Online Only?
In a word, yes. Sea of Thieves is a persistent online world, which means you will always share a server with up to 19 other players or four other ships, whichever is the greater number of players.
Due to the nature of the game, the answer to ‘is Sea of Thieves online only?’ will almost always be yes. As of writing, Rare has shown no sign of the game gaining an offline component, single-player story mode or the ability to play solo offline.
Is Sea of Thieves Online Only: Playing Solo Offline
You cannot play solo offline in Sea of Thieves. You can, however, play solo online in a two-man ship (or sloop). The hostilities that inevitably come with playing Sea of Thieves means it is recommended you set sail with a two to four-man squad.
Is Sea of Thieves Online Only: Future Plans
At this current time, there are no plans for the game to deviate from its online-only course. Sea of Thieves has been described as a ‘shared open-world adventure game’ for good reason: the crux of the enjoyment you will get from Sea of Thieves is intrinsically tied to its online state and the presence of plentiful players around you.
That isn’t to say there won’t be an offline single-player campaign in the near-future. Rare has spoken openly about adding new (weekly) content, and a big single-player, offline experience would surely bring players back in droves.
