Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the latest game in the Call of Duty series and the eagerly-anticipated return to the Modern Warfare franchise, is out this October, and the many fans of the series are itching to get their hands on it. The good news is, that may happen sooner rather than later, as Activision and Infinity Ward are holding a special alpha for the game this weekend. What’s more, there’s even a Modern Warfare alpha preload available too. Here’s what you need to download the Modern Warfare alpha, what’s included, and how long it’s available for.
Modern Warfare Alpha Preload | What consoles is it available for?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC this October, but unfortunately not all of those systems are going to be able to play this particular alpha. Due to Activision’s close partnership with Sony, in this case the first Modern Warfare alpha this weekend will only be available to PS4 owners. Xbox One and PC owners will be able to play the Modern Warfare beta next month, but the first taste is for PlayStation users only.
Modern Warfare Alpha Preload | How to get access to the alpha
The good news is, literally anyone with a PS4 can access the Modern Warfare alpha test this weekend. You don’t need to pre-order the game or have bought the Deluxe Edition or anything like that. You don’t even need to have a PS Plus subscription, despite that being required for most online games. You simply need to have your PS4 connected to the internet, then follow our steps below. We can’t guarantee you’ll do well in the alpha, but you’ll at least be able to play it.
Modern Warfare Alpha Preload | How to download the alpha
The alpha begins this weekend, but in order to allow Call of Duty fans on PS4 the maximum amount of time with the game, Activision has allowed the option to preload the software in advance. And it’s available now! As we write this, the preload went live a couple of hours ago today, August 22. It’s a fairly sizeable download for a simple alpha at between 22 to 36 Gb, especially as it only includes one mode, so if you want to try the game out this weekend it’s best that you preload as soon as possible.
In terms of downloading the alpha, you’ll need to head to the PlayStation Store on your PS4 console. From there you would hope such a big game as an exclusive early play for a new Call of Duty game would have a prominent position somewhere, but at the moment that’s not the case sadly. We managed to find the Modern Warfare Gunfight alpha in the What’s Hot section, but it was quite far to the right.
If you don’t see it, head to the search bar and type in “Modern Warfare Gunfight alpha.” It should pop up, otherwise shorten it to “Modern Warfare Gunfight” or even “Modern Warfare” and scroll down until you find it.
Modern Warfare Alpha Preload | What is included in the alpha?
As this is just a simple alpha, there’s only one mode included, which is called Gunfight mode. It’s a more intimate form of multiplayer than many Call of Duty fans may be expecting, as each round consists of four players in 2v2. Loadouts are unpredictable and are pretty randomized. The first duo to win five rounds in this setting wins the game.

This particular PS4 Gunfight alpha runs this weekend only, from August 23 to 25. Preload now and get playing the moment the alpha drops, which we’re guessing is around 10am PT/1pm ET/6pm BST on Friday.
