Switch to 'auto' when fighting easy opponents, or when you're against small groups.
It's better to focus on taking out one enemy party member at a time. Anyone with strong attacks, or healing abilities will be best to start with.
Special attacks that focus on single enemies typically do more damage than those that hit more.
When exploring dungeons, inch your way forwards and stop if you spot a patrolling enemy. When they turn away from you, tap on them - if you reach them while their back is turned, you'll get a free turn in the ensuing fight, giving you an upper hand. This doesn't work on bosses.
