How many Suicide Squad movies are there as of August 2021?
There are four Suicide Squad movies in total, in live-action and animated:
List of all the Suicide Squad movies released in order
- Batman: Assault On Arkham (2014) — animated, directed by Jay Oliva and Ethan Spaulding
- Suicide Squad (2016) — live-action, directed by David Ayer
- Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay (2018) — animated, directed by Sam Liu
- The Suicide Squad (2021) — live-action, directed by James Gunn
This year’s The Suicide Squad is a sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad movie, although viewers may not need to have watched the previous movie to enjoy Suicide Squad 2. The only real connection between the two are some of the characters and actors: Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman).
Batman: Assault On Arkham is focused primarily on the Suicide Squad and their attempts to recover the Riddler from Arkham Asylum, and is titled that way because the movie is part of the Batman Arkham game continuity — making the movie a direct prequel to Rocksteady’s upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League game. Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay, on the other hand, is set in the DC Animated Movie Universe and acts as a semi-sequel to The Flashpoint Paradox.
The Suicide Squad does possibly set up Suicide Squad 3 with its ending, although the most direct item coming after the movie is the Peacemaker HBO Max spin-off series starring John Cena which launches on the streaming service next year.
