Twitter font change today, August 11

Yes, the Twitter font did just change

Twitter has implemented a new font for its entire platform, and the results are drawing attention. Coincidentally, the font change soon began trending on Twitter itself. Some users don’t like the new Twitter font, and others don’t mind, but it’s the change itself that seems to be most talked about.

For quite a long time now, Twitter users on Windows have been seeing the Segoe UI font. And, given that we tend to check Twitter frequently throughout the day, that font style has probably become the norm for most users. Chances are good that most people didn’t even think about it.

But Twitter has been. Around the start of 2021, news began to break that Twitter was going to deploy a new custom typeface called Chirp. Android Police reports that it started appearing on macOS back in May, and it seems the change is just now making it to the rest of the service.

Naturally, the response is mixed. Did Twitter is now the trending phrase for people confused about the change, most of which seem to be more surprised than genuinely interested in the new style. Some have pointed out less noticeable changes, like losing the color in follow buttons, while others are now using the page as a platform to demand greater changes. By and large, though, the trend seems to be skewing negative.

At any rate, your eyes are not deceiving you. Yes, the Twitter font has changed, and no, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to change back any time soon. At the very least, the design team has been cooking up this new typeface for a while. Surely they’re eager to see it put to work. Embrace the change, as there may be more coming — after all, we did recently lose Fleets shortly after Twitter did away with the old crop function.
