What If? Episode 8: Is James Spader the Ultron voice actor?

What If? episode 8 features an alternate scenario in which Ultron won, but who is the voice actor for The Avengers villain? Does James Spader return to the character, who assumes Vision’s body in order to restore his own version of “peace” to the universe (i.e. killing everyone in it)?

Who voices Ultron in What If? episode 8?

Ultron isn’t voiced by James Spader in What If? episode 8, with the character instead being portrayed by Ross Marquand. The actor, best known for playing Aaron in The Walking Dead, reappears in What If? as Ultron after previously portraying Red Skull in the series’ first episode.

This isn’t the first time Marquand has played Ultron. The actor also assumed the role in the Avengers: Damage Control game, with him also appearing in Endgame as Red Skull, taking over the role from Hugo Weaving.

In What If? episode 8, an alternate universe is shown in which Ultron gets to Vision’s organic body first, becoming extremely powerful in the process. After Ultron quickly kills Thanos and obtains all the Infinity Stones, he then sees into the multiverse, fighting The Watcher and finally opening up the possibility of the different multiverses interacting with one another.

James Spader played Ultron in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which he was created by Tony Stark to protect the planet, only for Ultron to wind up becoming sentient and seeking to eradicate humanity in order to save Earth. While Spader doesn’t reprise the role of Ultron here, Marquand is a familiar voice to Marvel fans, so does an expectedly great job here. With Ultron now becoming What If’s big bad, it remains to be seen exactly how (or if) he will be thwarted in the finale.
