Splatoon 3 Nintendo Switch Online

Do you Need Nintendo Online for Splatoon 3?

Splatoon 3 was released with an expanded single-player campaign as well as a multitude of multiplayer options. The problem is that the introduction of Nintendo Online can complicate things. We’re here to help you to find out whether any of the Splatoon 3 modes need a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Does Splatoon 3 multiplayer need Nintendo Online?

Splatoon 3 online multiplayer modes need a Nintendo Online membership to be able to play them. This means that Salmon Run, Turf War, and the four Anarchy Battle modes — Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker, and Clam Blitz — all need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play them online with skill-based matchmaking. The upcoming X Battle and League Battle modes will also require a Nintendo Online membership when they’re added in a future update.

Game modes played in local multiplayer through the same wireless network do not need a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Private Battle can support up to eight players in local multiplayer while Salmon Run will support up to four players. However, the game does not support couch co-op or splitscreen multiplayer, therefore each player will still need their own Nintendo Switch console.

Does Splatoon 3 single-player need Nintendo Switch Online?

The Splatoon 3 Hero Mode, the game’s single-player campaign called Return of the Mammalians, can be played in its entirety without needing a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The brand new Tableturf Battles, the card-based 1v1 version of Turf War played at the Tableturf Battle Dojo in Splatsville, can also be played without Nintendo Online as it is a single-player mode that does not have any multiplayer options, either online or in local play.

Those wanting to pick up a Nintendo Switch Online membership can choose either the standard membership or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack as both will allow access to all of the Splatoon 3 game modes. Doing so will also allow voice chat with other players through the Nintendo Switch Online app, as well as access to SplatNet 3 where players can check battle records and replays, and order special gear.
