The Last of Us PC ‘Building Shaders’ Taking Hours and Crashing Fix

New owners of The Last of Us Part 1 on Steam are encountering numerous bugs, including a “Building Shaders” loading bar that takes hours to complete. Here’s everything we know about this error and what to do if you encounter it.

How to fix The Last of Us PC “Building Shaders” bug

When you load The Last of Us Part 1 on PC for the first time, you’ll notice a “Building Shaders” loading bar in the bottom right of your screen. This should take minutes, but many users are waiting over four hours for it to finish.

While it will eventually complete, people are noting the game crashes as much as every 20 minutes. However, when they attempt to request a refund, they are refused. This is because their refund window expired during the loading time. (Steam’s refund window is up to 2 hours of playtime).

If you find that your “Building Shaders” loading bar is taking longer than half an hour, we recommend immediately closing and refunding the game and waiting for an official fix.

Naughty Dog has acknowledged the issues encountered by players and is asking players to submit bug reports via their online form.
