Is Zelda Evil in Tears of the Kingdom?

As you play Tears of the Kingdom, you’ll likely wonder if Zelda is evil. She’s appeared around Hyrule, and almost everywhere she’s been sighted, something shady is happening. It’s enough to make you think that the Demon King might have taken control of her. But, unfortunately, the truth is that there’s something even more diabolical going on behind the scenes.

Is Zelda possessed by evil in Tears of the Kingdom?

Thankfully, Zelda is not evil in Tears of the Kingdom. All the sinister sightings of Zelda are fakes. If you do the Tears of the Dragon side quest, you’ll find the real Zelda’s memories from ages ago. One in particular, “#7: Sonia Is Caught by Treachery,” shows what’s happening.

In the memory, a Gerudo disguises herself as Zelda and attempts to assassinate Sonia. The real Zelda is able to expose the fake and save Sonia. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the forces of evil have stopped trying to imitate Zelda. All over Hyrule, people tell stories of the princess appearing and giving odd orders that seem to undermine or directly harm her people.

However, these appearances can’t be the real Zelda. Not only are their actions totally out of character for her, but we learn where she is as part of the Tears of the Dragon quest. Once you’ve visited all the geoglyphs in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you’ll understand that after the Imprisoning War, she took it upon herself to restore the Master Sword.

To restore the Master Sword and strengthen it even further, Zelda ingested her secret stone, embraced the sword, and transformed into the Divine Dragon of Light. Since then, she’s spent the ages circling above Hyrule, waiting for the day when Link will call upon the sword. Unfortunately, the transformation process wiped away her sense of self. However, that’s how we know that her alleged appearances across Hyrule are fakes.
