Mortal Kombat 1 Ornate Keys: How to Open Locked Chests in Invasion

The Mortal Kombat 1 Ornate Keys open one of the few types of treasure chests found in the Invasion mode, its adventure mode mix of the Krypt and towers. But the game does not just hand these out after fights and doesn’t spell out where to find them. Here’s how to get Ornate Keys in MK1’s Invasion mode and open locked chests.

To get Ornate Keys in MK1, you have to buy them from shops scattered around the map. These keys are only 100 Krowns, so they are pretty cheap (Krowns are the Invasion-specific currency). The shop is signified by the the blue six-armed Naknadan character that looks like Kollector from Mortal Kombat 11. There are a few on every one of the maps in Invasion, but you can’t buy more than one key from each merchant. You will have to go around to different shops to buy each one (some do not even have keys, either).

Ornate Keys can only be used on certain chests, which will show up in front of the chests before you try to open them. And since these chests are usually out of the way, it makes more sense to buy Ornate Keys when you come across them. They do take up one consumable inventory slot, but they are still worth carrying around since these chests can be a little out of the way. The layout in Invasion is not conducive to traveling quickly, so it is better to be prepared, especially for a mode where Krowns are easy to come by.

These chests usually have a few treats, like skins, palettes, Seasonal Kredits, and more. Given how Invasion seasons do not last indefinitely, it is better to open these chests while there is still time.

MK1 Ornate Key FAQ

Q: How can I obtain Ornate Keys in Mortal Kombat 1’s Invasion mode?

A: You can get Ornate Keys in MK1’s Invasion mode by purchasing them from shops scattered around the map. These shops are marked by the blue six-armed Naknadan character. Each key costs 100 Krowns, which is the Invasion-specific currency. However, you can’t buy more than one key from each merchant, so you’ll need to visit multiple shops.

Q: Where can I use the Ornate Keys?

A: Ornate Keys are used to open specific treasure chests in the Invasion mode. The chests that require these keys will display them in front of the chests before you attempt to open them. It’s advisable to purchase Ornate Keys when you see them, as the chests they unlock can be off the beaten path and the Invasion map layout doesn’t facilitate quick travel.

Q: What can I expect to find inside the chests opened with Ornate Keys?

A: The chests unlocked with Ornate Keys typically contain items such as skins, palettes, Seasonal Kredits, and other in-game rewards. Given the limited duration of Invasion seasons, it’s beneficial to open these chests as soon as you can to maximize your rewards.
