Dragon’s Dogma 2 Change Appearance for Free: How to Customize Character Without Microtransactions

Many players are wondering whether the Dragon’s Dogma 2 change appearance feature can be done for free. There’s a lot of controversy surrounding the $1.99 microtransaction that allows you to alter your appearance, but it seems strange for any comprehensive action RPG like DD2 to require anyone to pay just to customize your character. That said, you don’t have an additional character slot to make another avatar and the game doesn’t make it obvious if the option to change your body or race is even possible. Here’s whether you can customize your character for free in Dragon’s Dogma 2 without having to pay any microtransactions.

Can you change appearance for free in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

Dragon's Dogma 2 Change Appearance for Free Neomith Riftstone Vermund

Yes, the change appearance feature can be accessed for free in Dragon’s Dogma 2 after character creation by doing the following steps:

  1. Reach the capital of Vermund – After speaking with the captain at Melve and having him open the gate to the capital, head to Vermund either on foot or by oxcart. (You may need to escape from the griffin along the way.) This will likely take about four hours or so.
  2. Earn 500 RC – RC is mainly earned by having your pawn be used by other players, but you can also earn some by opening various chests around the world. Try not to spend any RC on higher level pawns if you want to save up.
  3. Purchase the Art of Metamorphosis from Neomith – Next to the riftstone in the capital is a vendor named Neomith (image above) who has the Art of Metamorphosis book (image below) available for purchase. You’ll need this item if you want to change all aspects of your character.
  4. Head to the barbarie – Close to the riftstone is a barber shop, denoted by a pair of scissors on the mini-map. Here, you can speak with Clovis and choose the “Modify Appearance” option that is only available if you have the Art of Metamorphosis book.

If you just want to change your character’s hairstyle, makeup, or markings, you don’t need the Art of Metamorphosis at all. You can just use gold to change them at a rate of 10,000 gold for one option or 25000 gold for all three options in one. That’s still a lot of money, though, especially at the beginning of the game, so you’ll need to save a lot just for cosmetics.

Otherwise, if you want to alter anything else like your character’s race, posture, body shape, weight, height, voice, and more, you’ll need to follow the steps above. (Your size and height impact your overall weight load, by the way.) Much later in the game, you can access another barber in the city of Battahl.
