CD Projekt RED Would Like Free DLC To Be an “Industry Standard”

Just to remind everyone of the greatness that has been the post-launch content for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt RED would like to remind everyone that all 16 pieces of DLC for the game is indeed free and available for download on every platform (PS4, Xbox One, PC).

Yes, most of that DLC has been weapon sets, armor, and other cosmetic items, but the latest new update comes with New Game+ which will surely bring incredible replay value to the game.

But co-founder of CD Projekt RED, Marcin Iwiński, wants to make a point in a statement:

We’ve been releasing free DLCs since launch, and today’s release of New Game +, the 16th and last of them, marks a special moment for us and, I hope, for all Wild Hunt fans as well. They can now restart their adventure and see how the story turns out if they make different choices than on their first play-through.

I’d like to extend my thanks to all the gamers who played our game and gave these DLCs a try. Nothing makes a developer happier than seeing gamers have fun with what they create.

I would really like to see such initiatives become an industry standard rather than an exception to the general rule, and I hope that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has set a good example.

While I have no problem with developers charging for extra content after release, especially if they're reasonably priced, but so long as the DLC isn't just content that "should" have been in the main game, I'm all for free DLC. As much as I want free DLC to be an industry standard, I think that not having it be so common makes developers like CD Projekt RED stand out.

What do you think? Should free DLC be the industry standard?
