The Witness May Head to Virtual Reality, But Won’t Support PlayStation VR

The Witness is no doubt January 2016's biggest game release. While most gamers are busy speculating about what it's like to play and how challenging its puzzles are, others marvel at the prospect of playing the game in virtual reality. As it turns out, those who want to enjoy Jonathan Blow's latest experience in virtual reality form will have to rely on a gaming PC.

Speaking to iDigitalTimes, The Witness creator Jonathan Blow shared that his latest game could eventually support virtual reality headsets. Unfortunately, PlayStation VR is a no-go, as explained:

Not on PlayStation VR simply because to support that you would’ve had to design the game from the outset. We started this game a long time ago way before PlayStation VR was a concept so for for this game. We might do some support for PC based UV because it’s easier to add that in later.

The Witness has been described as a beautiful puzzle game that could lend itself extremely well to a virtual reality experience, making this a potentially significant loss for PlayStation VR.

Oculus Rift was recently announced to have a $599 price point. While PlayStation VR's price point is yet to be announced, it is known that Sony will have a locked-down platform that requires an approval process for all supported applications and games. This Apple-esque closed nature of the device contrasts in rough fashion with the open-nature of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which have seen support of all kinds pre-launch. This, in addition to PlayStation VR's reliance on the non-upgradable PS4, gives it a tough hill to climb as it nears release.
