Sony Pictures, as hinted last year, has confirmed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that it is producing an animated movie based on emojis. Sony paid more than $1 million to secure the rights for the movie during a bidding war last year.
Kristine Belson, Sony Pictures Animation president, shared an official description of the movie which is slated to arrive in 2017 with a statement to The Wrap:
Inside your phone, there's a secret world – and we enter through the text app where we discover Emoji Valley, where the industrious Emoji live and work.
The setup for this plot, co-written by Eric Siegal and Anthony Leondis, reminds me a bit of both Monsters Inc. and Wreck-It Ralph. Here, every app has its own world that emojis will explore.
Apparently, the movie will incorporate the likes of Spotify and perhaps Facebook for marketing and sponsorships. So let's just hope this isn't a product-placement commercial drawn out to an hour and a half.
