Sonic the Hedgehog will be in his first starring role in a feature film next year. The Paramount movie will be opening in cinemas on November 25th, 2019.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Neal H. Moritz is the producer of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Both Deadpool director Tim Miller and Toby Ascher are the executive producers, while Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons are the co-producers.
Newcomer Jeff Howler will be directing the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, as he makes his directorial debut. He is best known for being the director of 2005 Oscar-nominated short Gopher Broke, in which Tim Miller interestingly acted as executive producer. The script will be written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the latter of which is best known for being the creator of Fox’s Golan the Insatiable animated series.
Paramount is envisioning the Sonic the Hedgehog movie as a mix of live action and CGI. If so, this setting will be similar to movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Space Jam. Computer-generated or animated characters will be running around in the real world amongst real human beings. At the moment, the only competition facing the Sonic the Hedgehog movie will be Warner Bros’ Margie Claus, which is a musical comedy starring Melissa McCarthy as the wife of Santa Claus.
Sonic the Hedgehog is the protagonist and main character of the game franchise with the same name. He was created by Sega in 1991 to act as a rival to Nintendo’s own iconic mascot, Mario. Two of Sonic’s most recent games were Sonic Mania, which emulates the gameplay and visuals of the original Sega Genesis games, and Sonic Forces, which includes a more modern take on the classic Sonic gameplay. Both were released in 2017. Now there are rumors circulating that a Sonic racing game is reportedly in development.
