Chrono Trigger Steam Port is Receiving an Update to Make it Like the SNES Original

The heavily criticized Chrono Trigger Steam port is set to receive a number of updates, including one that will see players able to switch between the high-resolution graphics of the port, or the original look of the classic SNES game. The patches, which will be rolled out over the coming months, are a direct result of negative player feedback Square Enix received regarding the “updated” version of the JRPG.

The update, which was announced by Square Enix on the game’s Steam forum, will see the Chrono Trigger Steam port introducing a feature in which players can choose between two visual options. These will include its original SNES look or the high-res visuals utilized by its PC port.

Read the statement from Square Enix below:

“Hi everyone,

Thanks for all of your feedback, patience and support so far.

We have been working on addressing the issues that you’ve raised and will be releasing a number of patches over the coming months as we continue to support CHRONO TRIGGER on Steam.

We’re aiming to release the first of these patches in the first half of April, and the biggest change is that it will include an option to switch between the current high-resolution graphics, and the original graphical style of CHRONO TRIGGER.

We’ll post a full list of changes here when the first patch is released. For now, be assured that we’re working very hard on adjusting, updating and supporting CHRONO TRIGGER on Steam.

As CHRONO TRIGGER is going to receive patches over the coming months, we are going to extend the availability of the Limited Edition until:

5PM, April 30th BST / 9AM, April 30th PDT

Thanks again from all of us on the CHRONO TRIGGER team.”

We previously referred to the Chrono Trigger Steam port as a “big piece of garbage” in our write-up about the game, referring to it as a “hot mess” which was littered with bugs and an ugly UI. Our thoughts were echoed by fans of the 1995 original, who were left disappointed after realizing the direction Square Enix had opted to go in for what many had hoped would be a straight re-release of the JRPG.

It’s good to see Square Enix taking player feedback on board, and hopefully these updates drastically improve this disappointing port. With the first update set to release this month, JRPG fans will want to keep an eye on this port’s progress.
