Nintendo Switch Will Have a Strong 2018 Thanks to Unannounced Games, Says GameStop CEO

The Nintendo Switch had an amazing first-year launch, especially with many of 2017’s best games turning out to be Switch games. This includes award-winning games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. Thanks to last month’s Nintendo Direct and Nindies Showcase presentations, we know that many great games such as Dark Souls Remastered, a Super Smash Bros title and many more will also be released sometime in 2018.

According to GameStop CEO Mike K. Mauler, there are more titles yet to be announced for the Nintendo Switch. During GameStop’s Fourth Quarter 2017 Earnings Call, he also claims that these unannounced games will allow the Nintendo Switch to have a “very, very strong” year in 2018. Here’s his statement on the subject:

“We know what happened with the Wii U. I’d say this is definitely a whole different platform that we saw in the past. We have visibility to the software… So, last year was a tremendous year for their software as well as hardware, between Zelda and Mario Odyssey and all the games that they had, it really drove a lot of hardware sales as well as software. I think, this year, when we look at the slate of titles – many of which haven’t been announced yet – this year looks also very, very strong. So, I think, at least for 2018, we’ll continue to see the strong software slate drive additional install based on the hardware and increase attach rate. We don’t have, really, visibility for ’19 yet, but for ’18, it should play out that way.”

At the time of writing, we have no idea when these unannounced titles would be revealed. We think that they will probably be announced during the upcoming E3 2018 in June. In other related news, we reported last month that the Nintendo Switch managed to surpass the PS2’s first-year sales, as well as already outselling the Gamecube’s total lifetime sales in Japan.
