Kojima Believes He’s “Misinterpreted”, Doesn’t Want To Be Known As “The Metal Gear Guy”

Despite the fact that Hideo Kojima has done little more than create new Metal Gear Solid games since the release of Zone of the Enders 2, he does not want to be labeled as "the Metal Gear guy."

In an interview with EGM, Kojima told the outlet that he's "often misinterpreted,” going on to add that he's always wanted "to work on original properties, but Metal Gear offers plenty of benefits." Kojima does, however, plan to incorporate new IP concepts into his "next Metal Gear" title… whatever that means.

He elaborated on why it is so difficult to move on from the franchise, citing his brand-new engine as one example. "The Fox Engine, for example, took a lot of time and money [to create]; we were only able to develop it because it was intended for the next Metal Gear. In the next game, I’m introducing concepts intended for entirely new intellectual properties using the Metal Gear brand," he explained.

“I’ll admit that I hope my future endeavours are thought of as ‘works by Hideo Kojima’ rather than ‘from the creator of Metal Gear'," Kojima added. "I haven’t really shown the world what else I might be capable of yet. This may sound pretentious, but I don’t like being thought of as ‘the Metal Gear guy.’ There’s a lot more I can do.”

Would you like to see Kojima pursue other ideas, or is more Metal Gear worth the sacrifice? Let us know in the comments below.
