Paul Rustchynsky Joins Project CARS Studio

After being laid off by Codemasters following the release of Onrush, Paul Rustchynsky has joined Slightly Mad Studios, the developer behind Project CARS. He’ll be the game director on an as-yet-unannounced project, and has said that he “can’t wait to share more about what’s to come.”

Veteran game developer Rustchynsky made news last month after he and the rest of the team behind action arcade racer Onrush were laid off by Codemasters in what the publisher described to Eurogamer as “normal course of business,” adding fuel to the fire of the current fight for better working rights in the games industry. He’s making news again today, announcing on Twitter that he’s joining Slightly Mad Studios, the developer of racing sim Project CARS, to serve as game director for a project yet to be announced.

Paul Rustchynsky has had a pretty prolific career, acting as Codemasters’ game director on the likes of Driveclub, and the action-packed off-road racing game series MotorStorm. His most recent project, OnRush, is a vehicular combat game that saw a pretty decent reception from critics, but for whatever reason sold poorly, a factor in the Codemasters layoffs. It looks like Slightly Mad Studios is going to be a pretty good fit for him, with the studio having developed the Project CARS series, which gave players a sort of sandbox experience with realistic driving physics that impressed critics.

We don’t yet know what new project Paul Rustchynsky will be directing for the studio, but we’re likely to find out soon, what with his excitement to share more news on whatever he’s working on.
