Moby Dick Studios Announces The Phantom Pain [Update: Trailer Inside]

If there's one thing we can count on from the VGAs, it's a new game announcement, but nobody was expecting this.

To get the ball rolling at this year's show, a new game called The Phantom Pain was announced. Its narrative is centered around the intense struggles of its protagonist, who awakens from a coma with the world around him in complete chaos. More specifically, the hospital he's been staying at is under attack from intimidating foes with gas masks on. Naturally, he runs—and hides—for his life. He looks down to notice his arm has been amputated and replaced with a hook, and thus the adventure begins.

As far as what the name means, Wikipedia's description of phantom pain might be a hint.

A phantom limb is the sensation that an amputated or missing limb (even an organ, like the appendix) is still attached to the body and is moving appropriately with other body parts. Approximately 60 to 80% of individuals with an amputation experience phantom sensations in their amputated limb, and the majority of the sensations are painful.

The Phantom Pain is being developed by Moby Dick Studios, a Swedish company that was recently founded. Although the trailer featured some impressive visuals, the game is slated to release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Here's the trailer for the game that aired during the VGAs.
