Red Dead Redemption 2 Sales

Red Dead Redemption 2 Has Biggest Opening Weekend in Entertainment History

Red Dead Redemption sales are through the roof, with it now being reported that the game has had the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history. Rockstar Games has announced that RDR2 has achieved $725 million in worldwide retail sell-through during its first three days, with it being the second-highest grossing entertainment launch ever. This is just behind the release of its previous open-world game, Grand Theft Auto 5, which launched on a Tuesday and achieved $1 billion in three days.

Red Dead Redemption 2 reached a number of early milestones, with it also becoming the most pre-ordered full game on the PlayStation Network, along with generating the largest number of day one game sales ever on the service. The stats for RDR2‘s performance on Microsoft’s Xbox One have yet to be released, though it’s imaginable that it accomplished similar feats on the console.

When compared with movie openings weekends, RDR2 blasted past Avengers: Infinity War, which grossed $640 million in its opening weekend. The second highest-grossing movie opening weekend, The Fate of the Furious, generated $541 million.

Red Dead Redemption 2 published Take-Two shared the following details regarding the open-world western game’s achievements:

  • Biggest opening weekend in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases;
  • Second biggest launch (three days) in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases;
  • Biggest entertainment launch of 2018;
  • Most pre-ordered full game ever on PlayStation Network;
  • Biggest day one full game sales ever on PlayStation Network;
  • Biggest first three days full game sales ever on PlayStation Network.

While RDR2 didn’t pull in the same numbers as Grand Theft Auto 5, the GTA series is Rockstar’s most popular work, so this is still an incredible accomplishment. It seems unlikely that another game will top this record during the current console generation, and with Red Dead Online set to launch in November, sales for the game are only set to increase.

Red Dead Redemption 2 launched to rave reviews, with GameRevolution awarding it a score of 5 out of 5. A prequel to the 2010 hit Red Dead Redemption, it was revealed yesterday that it had achieved double the number of sales as its predecessor in the UK. With its US sales also proving to be hugely impressive, it’s already a barn-storming success for Take-Two and Rockstar.
