Professional speedrunner and Twitch streamer Trihex recently spent some time doing his thing in Super Mario Maker 2. It isn’t particularly surprising that a prolific speedrunner is tackling challenging levels in this game, but what is surprising is that one level in particular—titled “Cat Trick EX2″—took him more than eight hours of repeated attempts to complete.
Cat Trick EX2 is a level that ultimately took Trihex only 42″316 to complete, but the road to that time was beleaguered with repeated failures. The level features a number of tricky jumps at sharp angles, switchable spike blocks, a veritable army of Thwomps, and more lava than the entire state of Hawaii. What’s worse, you can only successfully complete the level as Cat Mario, adding another layer of challenge to the whole ordeal.
At the conclusion of the Twitch stream, he noted that he had been streaming for 15 hours and a large chunk of those hours were spent repeatedly trying to beat the level. Even so, his daylong effort was nearly 4 seconds slower than the creator’s time of 38″516.
Describing the level as “jank,” Trihex cooled down from the event by talking with chat and apologizing for his lack of energy following the marathon stream. This certainly isn’t the first time he’s spent a crazy amount of hours trying to beat a single level in a game or reach some other similarly lofty goal, but this is definitely one of the more notable examples for how supremely challenging the level ultimately turned out to be.
You can watch the magic moment where Trihex beats Cat Trick EX2 below. If you’d like to see the entire stream from start to finish, you can do that, too, as long as you have a spare 15 hours or so to kill. This wasn’t the first time he’s had to overcome such a tough challenge (and it probably won’t be the last), but it sure did look like one of the more exhausting experiences!
