Microsoft Xbox One Controller Won’t Work With PC Until 2014

The Xbox 360 controller made for an excellent controller for PC games, prompting many gamers to eagerly anticipate the Xbox One controller even more so than the console itself. But anyone thinking about using that refined controller with those new impulse triggers on your beastly PC will have to wait a while.

A rep for Microsoft told GamesBeat that because the Xbox 360 and Xbox One don't share the same technology, new software has to be created specifically for the new controller to work with PC games, and PC games will have to start supporting it. And these things take time. Likely some time in 2014 since they're busy focusing on the actual Xbox One console at the moment.

New wireless protocol, combined with the ability to work in ‘wired’ mode, and the addition of features like Impulse triggers, means that new software has to be written and optimized for the PC.

There is also some work that we need to do to make sure that existing PC games that support the Xbox 360 controller will work with the Xbox One controller.

While it seems trivial, it’s actually quite a bit of dedicated work for all that to be seamless for the user.

So for now, if you want to use an Xbox One controller, you need to buy an Xbox One. Just make sure you have plenty of AA batteries on hand.
