Valve Announces SteamOS, A Free Operating System Designed To Take Over Your Living Room

Valve's first of three Steam-related announcements has been uncovered, and it's all about the company's new operating system, SteamOS.

According to the reveal, SteamOS "combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines."

Interestingly enough, SteamOS will run on "any living room machine" and "will provide access to the best games and user-generated content available." It stands to reason that Valve is being particularly ambiguous here because one of its later announcements will have to do with hardware itself. Will SteamOS support come to Blu-ray players? Other game consoles like Xbox One and PS4? We'll just have to wait and see.

The SteamOS platform is built upon four main features: "In-home Streaming," "Family Sharing," "Music, TV, Movies," and "Family Options." These all will be "available soon in both SteamOS and the Steam client."

For every specific detail, be sure to check out the first announcement in full right here. The second announcement is set to be revealed on Wednesday, so be sure to check back here on GameRevolution at that time for the next wave of news. In the meantime, sound off in the comments below with your thoughts on Steam's bold new approach to taking over your living room.
