Valve’s Steam Controller Is… Different And Totally Awesome

Valve has just unveiled the Steam Controller, a new method of input that takes the flexibility one gets with a keyboard and mouse, and melds it with a traditional controller design. The result? Something entirely unique that holds a lot of promise.

Behold.

This new controller will support the entire catalog of Steam games, even older titles, which is no small feat. It comes equipped with dual trackpads for an unprecedented level of precision that simply can't be achieved by traditional analog sticks. Each pad is clickable as well, acting as a button.

The Steam Controller also takes rumble to the next level with "a new generation of super-precise haptic feedback, employing dual linear resonant actuators. These small, strong, weighted electro-magnets are attached to each of the dual trackpads. They are capable of delivering a wide range of force and vibration, allowing precise control over frequency, amplitude, and direction of movement." Sounds awfully impressive to me.

Oh yeah, there's also a touch screen, which "can work as a scrolling menu, a radial dial, provide secondary info like a map or use other custom input modes we haven’t thought of yet." There are also a number of physical buttons, which have been positioned specifically for accessibility and comfort.

If that weren't enough, the controller will also be completely hackable and feature shared configurations, so players can customize their control input however they see fit. Might this be the best controller we've ever seen? Maybe. Just maybe. Let us know what you think of the device in the comments below.
