Details on the Demon’s Souls Digital Deluxe Edition have been released alongside a new gameplay video today and it’s already proving contentious — longtime fans have noted that several iconic items are locked behind a paywall for the Demon’s Souls PS5 launch in a game that is already pretty expensive.
Demon’s Souls is essentially the father to the more popular Dark Souls franchise and, as a consequence, all of the Soulslike games that came after it. Unfortunately, it was never ported to the PS4; that means that players new to the Soulslike genre had a hard time enjoying the game that started it all. The announcement of a remake coming to the PS5 first teased a year ago was certainly welcome news to many fans, but it has been marred by the revelation that the Demon’s Souls remake Digital Deluxe Edition will be locking some items behind a paywall.
Demon’s Souls remake Digital Deluxe Edition makes the game easier
Pre-order bonuses are nothing new for games, but Soulslike games have largely avoided selling players usable items. The massive Dark Souls Trilogy Collector’s Edition, for example, only gives the player some physical goodies along with the games and all of their DLC. However, the upcoming Demon’s Souls Digital Deluxe Edition locks several items behind a paywall and gives early access to others as noted on in a tweet from @VattiVidya.
The Red-Eye Knight Armor, Boletarian Royalty Armor, and Ritual Blade can be used by the player character; each of these items are worn or wielded by iconic enemies in the game. Unfortunately, it appears that the only way to get these will be to purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition. Furthermore, the following items can apparently be accessed early by the player:
- Legendary Hero Soul
- Renowned Warrior Soul
- Storied Warrior Soul
- Hoplite Shield
- Ring of Longevity
- Preservation Grains
- Phosphorescent Grains
- Bearbug Grains
- Large Hardstone Shard
- Moonlightstone Shard
This may not seem like a big deal, but Soulslike games are notoriously challenging. As this is one of From Software’s most iconic games, many players are upset at the perceived ability to buy power through the Demon’s Souls Digital Deluxe Edition. That’s not the only issue, either — the Digital Deluxe Edition will cost $89.99, a big ask for a game that already costs $69.99 for the Standard Edition.
