Bethesda Adds Free Games to Steam as Launcher Migration Begins Today

With Bethesda closing its Bethesda.net launcher, players can begin transferring their game libraries to steam from today. As part of the process, Bethesda has added some of its classic games to Steam and all players can download them for free regardless of whether they owned them previously.

Which Bethesda games are free on Steam?

Elder Scrolls Arena

Five classic games were added to Steam yesterday, April 26, including the following three free titles:

  • The Elder Scrolls: Arena
  • The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
  • Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

As noticed by Kotaku, two other games — The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire — are available for a small price of $6. Of course, there are other Bethesda titles that were already available for free on Steam, including Quake Champions, Fallout Shelter, and The Elder Scrolls: Legends.

The Bethesda.net launcher for PC games will be retired next month. Starting today, April 27, players will be able to transfer their Bethesda.net library to Steam, including all of the games, game saves, and the wallet funds associated with that account. Most of those games will have their saves transferred automatically although some will have to be transferred manually. Unfortunately, any saves from Wolfenstein: Youngblood are unable to be transferred, although players will be able to move any in-game Gold to their Steam account.

On May 11, the Bethesda.net launcher will be discontinued. Any players who have not completed the transfer process will still be able to do so beyond this date as libraries will not be lost. Players will also still be able to access Bethesda.net services such as game mods, in-game items like skins, news, and updates. Games that require a Bethesda.net login will also continue to do so. More information can be found on Bethesda’s dedicated FAQ.

In other news, the Super Mario Bros. animated movie has been delayed until next year. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced the delay but didn’t give a reason for its move to spring 2023. Elsewhere, the Xbox Series X|S consoles became the best-selling US consoles throughout March in terms of dollar sales, although the Nintendo Switch beat it in unit sales.
