Steam Joy-Con Update Beta

Steam Client Beta Update Adds Nintendo Joy-Con Controller Support

The latest Steam Client Beta update has focused on support for Nintendo’s line of controllers, specifically the Joy-Con controllers and the Nintendo Online classic controllers. Players can now use Joy-Con controllers in games that include controller support, although some have been encountering issues since the update was added yesterday.

Steam Client Beta – August 4 Update Patch Notes

NES Classic Controller

The August 4 Steam Client Beta update only features a couple of changes for compatibility with Nintendo Joy-Con and Nintendo Online classic controllers, which can be seen in the full patch notes below:

Steam Input

  • Added support for Nintendo Joy-Con controllers, both individually as a mini-gamepad and combined into pairs
  • Improved support for the Nintendo Online classic controllers

Syncing Joy-Con and Nintendo Online classic NES controllers to the PC can be done through the Bluetooth devices section of your PC’s settings. Make sure your Joy-Con controllers are powered off before holding down the SYNC button for a few seconds. Now the controllers are in pair mode, you should be able to add them in the settings by adding them as new Bluetooth devices. The Nintendo Online classic SNES, Nintendo 64, and SEGA Genesis controllers can all be connected via Bluetooth or USB cable.

Unfortunately, the update seems to have created an issue where only one of the Joy-Con controllers can be detected. Some believe this is linked to a long-standing issue that Linux players have endured where their controllers behave unpredictably. This is due to a kernel driver conflict where two different operations fight for use over the controllers. despite the problem being logged in 2019 with a pretty detailed description of the issue, Steam is yet to fix the problem.

In other news, Square Enix’s new Manga Up service has strange censorship and a terrible pay model. Elsewhere, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pack Wave 3 tracks may have been leaked.
