Sony Unsure About Vita’s Future

While PlayStation 4 proves to be a massive success for Sony in the west month after month, its handheld counterpart hasn't seen the same level of promising consistency.

The portable gaming market in Japan is a bit stronger than it is in North America and Europe, so PlayStation Vita will continue see more big-budget support in its home country. "I certainly think you’ll still see [Vita] as a triple-A machine in Japan where it has a different function with the console dynamic of the marketplace," Sony's Andrew House told IGN. "That for me is a given. It’s hard to say in terms of the other markets."

As far as the rest of the world is concerned, however, House admitted that the company is taking more of a wait and see approach. For now, it appears Sony plans to rely on Vita's remote play connectivity with PS4 to help gamers scratch that triple-A itch and then see how the feature pans out in the long term.

"I think remote play is still in its nascent stages, I think we need to have better understanding," House added. "We know a lot of players are embracing it and using it and seem to like the experience a lot, but necessarily that changes the dynamic. You know, if you can play your PlayStation 4 content at will on Vita, then does that obviate the necessity of having Triple-A content or not? I think that question will stay unanswered for a little bit."

Do you own a Vita? If so, what are you thoughts on Sony's handheld gaming machine? Is it worth the price of entry? Does the apparent lack of upcoming triple-A support concern you?
