This may not be about beating a dead horse so much as it is about leading a sick horse to pasture.
NBC Universal will finally be scrapping G4, a gaming-centric channel that launched in 2002 and is most known for X-Play with Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb, its introducing of Ninja Warrior to America, Attack of the Show with Kevin Periera and Olivia Munn, and incessant reruns of Cops and LOST.
G4 was supposed to be rebranded in late 2012, but without getting any new programs since then, we knew it would eventually succumb to atrophy. With G4 having been dropped from Time Warner and Comcast and its popular hosts landing opportunities elsewhere, this outcome was inevitable
I have a few fond memories of G4, though. Having watched the channel when I was a teenager and in college, it is a part of why I'm in the business now. Considering the advent of YouTube, Twitch, and the internet in general, I don't think we'll see another gaming-centric channel like G4 in the future. Better to leave nostalgia where it is.
