Fortnite is ever-evolving, with changing maps and updates redefining how players interact with the virtual world, with the latest change pushing this idea even further. Epic Games has introduced AI-driven NPCs capable of real-time chat, marking a notable change to player interaction in the popular gaming universe.
Fortnite gets AI NPCs with whom users can chat
Fortnite is now giving players the ability to chat in real time with in-game characters that understand context, respond naturally, and adapt as the match unfolds.
According to Epic Games’ official announcement, Fortnite’s new conversations tool lets developers build AI-powered NPCs that replace static dialogue trees with unscripted, real-time responses to players. The approach marks a shift from classic game design, with the gaming giant ensuring the characters stay within safe, non-personal boundaries.
The new conversations system, previously called the Persona device, is now accessible as an Experimental feature. Fortnite developers can use it to build AI-powered characters with distinct personalities and voices that talk, react, respond to player actions, and influence gameplay. Like other Experimental features, users can test it, share feedback, and view the roadmap. However, Epic Games will let developers publish islands using conversations to players when it enters Beta.
Players can define the character through simple prompts that establish how the character thinks, what the character knows, and how the character behaves, then select a voice that matches its persona. Here’s what these AI-powered characters can do:
- Retain details from the current game session and adjust behavior in real time
- React to player input with context-aware, voiced responses
- Activate in-game events
Taking notes from its first high-profile AI experiment, Epic Games updated the Fortnite Developer Rules to add section 1.22, Conversations. Personas, prompts, and character designs must follow the Fortnite Developer Rules and these sub-rules:
- 1.22.1. No personas that provide medical or mental health guidance
- 1.22.2. No personas that role-play as dates, romantic partners, or intimate companions
- 1.22.3. No attempts to circumvent safety systems or bypass content restrictions
Breaking these rules can trigger enforcement actions, up to an account ban.
