What Are You Playing? January 9th, 2019

January’s a big month for new releases, with a number of exciting games just around the corner. While this week is certainly a slower one when it comes to the launch of fresh new titles, the downtime means the GameRevolution editorial team has been dipping into their backlog and running through uncompleted games from 2018, or diving into their review assignments.

After checking out what we’ve been playing this week below, be sure to let us know what games you’ve been enjoying in the comments section below!

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “Into the Breach. It’s pretty much the perfect ‘second monitor game,’ allowing me to have it running in the background while I’m working. It’s one of our games of the year for 2018, it’s made by the folks who developed the inimitable FTL, and it plays like Advance Wars. What’s not to like?

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I’m playing through Tales of Vesperia. I played through Abyss a few years ago and loved it, so I’m eager to see if this one measures up. I’m not too far into it yet, but I’m enjoying it so far. It’s so anime it hurts, but in a good way.”

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “I’m finally reaching the end of Red Dead Redemption 2. I’m so happy that I powered on through the slow start, as the game is now really ramping up with unexpected twists and turns. I’ve also been playing Black Ops 4‘s multiplayer, which continues to entertain me despite the horrible microtransactions and time-based rewards.”

Bradley Russell, news editor: I’m playing Kiwami 2 this week. I recently stumbled across a side quest where you have to accompany a yakuza boss to, how do I put this delicately, an adult baby club. Rattles are shaken, diapers are pooped in, and it all ends in a big fistfight. It’s the best/worst thing I’ve ever seen.

Michael Leri, features editor: “I’m calling from 2009 because I just got done wrapping up Shadow Complex for the first time and replayed Devil May Cry 4 in anticipation for DMC5. Shadow Complex is still weirdly one of the better Metroidvanias and DMC4, well, still feels like a 2003 ass game. Shitty camera angles, a crap story, and boring ass level design make me worried that DMC5 will feel archaic as hell. Fingers crossed Capcom has learned.”
