best video game movie

The Daily Vote | What video game movie are you most excited about?

The Daily Vote is a daily community feature in which GameRevolution’s readers choose the victor of a hotly-contested topic. Today we ask the community which upcoming video game movie they’re most excited about.

Video game movies don’t have a great track record. While there are a few that are watchable, there aren’t any that are truly great. Series like the Resident Evil film franchise certainly have their fans, but there has yet to be a video game movie that has truly lived up to its potential. This year, two major game franchises are receiving adaptations in the form of Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog. While many are excited about the former, the latter has received a… mixed reaction to say the least. Still, it could surpass expectations, and with the Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid movies still being worked on, there are plenty of opportunities for a good video game movie to finally arrive.

We’ve shared our thoughts below, but we want to know YOUR opinion. Let us know which upcoming video game movie you’re most looking forward to in the Twitter poll or Facebook post below, or leave your own response in the comments section. As always, the winner of the poll will be revealed in tomorrow’s edition of The Daily Vote!

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: Detective Pikachu. We’ve seen plenty of video game movies that have taken the source material and toned it down several notches, but Detective Pikachu is shaping up to be one of very few that run with the ball and take in a whole ‘nother direction. A live-action Pokemon movie sounded terrible, but after seeing the trailers, I’m all-in on this fresh take on the Pokemon universe.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I’m most excited about a Metal Gear Solid movie. I feel like it will either be a disaster or the best movie based on a video game ever. I liked Vogt-Roberts’s Kong: Skull Island a lot, but his relative inexperience makes me a bit nervous as to how MGS: The Movie will end up. He’s also got a pretty nice beard.”

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “I’m looking forward to seeing Detective Pikachu. I think seeing Pokemon embedded in a realistic world is a take that I’ll find super refreshing. Hopefully, this can break the mold for some more gritty/realistic games…”

Bradley Russell, news editor: “Out of all of those, I am a little giddy over a potential MGS movie. Jordan Vogt-Roberts seems to get Metal Gear in a way that few other people do, so it’ll be great to see what he can dream up. If all else fails, we’ll have a flabby, unfilmable mess coming to the big screen and it’ll still be out before Death Stranding. Result.”

Michael Leri, features editor: “Given that Detective Pikachu exists and we’re very likely to see it actually come out, that’s the movie that gets my vote. I’m not a huge Pokemon fan anymore but seeing how it seems to understand the source material is something we need more of. I love Tom Holland, Dan Trachtenberg, and Uncharted as well as Metal Gear Solid and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island was rad), but those only currently exist in the ether with the other video game movies.”
