It’s time for another Retro Ad Replay article! This is the series where we head backwards in time to reminisce and celebrate the anniversary of some of the most significant moments in gaming. If you find yourself wanting more content like this, be sure to visit Mandatory.com.

In this May 19 edition of Retro Ad Replay, we’re heading back five years to when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first launched on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. May 19, 2015 was the day when players got to take control of Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter with supernatural abilities. On October 15, 2019, the game was ported across to the Nintendo Switch, an impressive feat that saw the full game made available for portable play.

The original GameRevolution The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt review awarded the game a 3.5, praising the “massive and diverse world,” “interesting story and characters, “helpful tutorial systems,” “fun-to-use magic,” “extraordinary quantity of side content,” and “day/night cycle and weather.”

Here’s a snippet from the GR review:

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a colossal game rich with story, content, and landmass. But it’s a case of bigger isn’t always better. It spends a great deal of its energy trying to impress the audience with unparalleled scope. The result is an experience that succeeds in its mission of being a grand experience, but commonly missteps when it comes to fundamentals such as combat, leveling systems, and user interface design. Early on in the adventure it’s easy to feel captivated by the sheer scale of it all, but as its shortcomings come to light the attention that it worked so hard to capture can become lost.

However, we reviewed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt again when it launched for the Nintendo Switch. Yep, this huge game came to Nintendo’s handheld, allowing The Witcher 3 to be played on the go. We awarded that version of the game a 4.5/5, as it “made the impossible possible.”
