An Updating List of PlayStation 4 Updates We Want

Sony's PlayStation 4 hardware has almost completed its first year on the market and while it has sold millions of units at this point, many gamers have probably discovered things they'd like to change in order to get the system to perform more to their own expectations. You might feel media capabilities, notably important to communities like NeoGAF and heavy console users like myself, should be added to the system immediately.

Here's our list of must-have updates, though it is not complete. We'll add more and remove features if they're added to the PS4.

DLNA Media

I've been using a media-streaming solution for watching movies through my PlayStation 3 system, but PlayStation 4 does not offer the same capabilities out of the box. I only keep one plugged in at a time so it can be frustrating to stop watching something on Hulu or Netflix, just to switch to have to change consoles. Instead, I've taken to plugging my computer in directly to the TV though there's no shortage of excuses to use my PlayStation 3.

Faster Verification

I really like PS4's immediacy, especially in starting up and logging in but lately as the amount of software I've had installed on the system, including off-disc installation data, I've found noticeable slow down in actually launching a piece of entertainment. Whether you're talking about a game, a game off-disc, or an app like Hulu. I can impatiently hit the X button on something I want to use three or four times just to go through the pop-up message and back to the dashboard to prove my point.

Backwards Compatibility for PSN Purchases

If you've already bought and paid for a game via PSN, I think it would add incredible value to the PS4's digital focus given how easy it is to switch between games. Despite the verification delay in launching apps and software, the PS4 really hauls ass on everything I've thrown at it with regard to leaving something paused on Hulu to switch to another app or a game. I have a few digital licenses for full retail software and jumping back and forth between these also works like a snap.
