Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey is Currently the Best Reviewed Game of All Time on Game Rankings and OpenCritic

Unless you live in a pineapple under the sea, you probably already know that the most anticipated Switch game for the rest of 2017 – Super Mario Odyssey – is now out today exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. As such, reviews have been dropping left and right since yesterday morning when the embargo lifted for the next Mario adventure.

Similar to fellow Switch masterpiece from earlier this year, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey is breaking records left and right. What may surprise you, though, is the fact that on its first day at launch, it is already regarded as the best reviewed game of all-time on two major aggregate sites.

Similar to Metacritic and how Rotten Tomatoes does it for movies, OpenCritic and Game Rankings bring together reviews for video games from across many, many different gaming sites to average them together into a somewhat definitive score for that specific title. Both have a ranking system of sorts based on each game’s score, with Game Rankings’ site revolving completely around that.

As the dust is beginning to settle some on what video game critics thought of Super Mario Odyssey, it is making waves on OpenCritic and Game Rankings. On each of those platforms, it is currently ranked as the number one best reviewed game of all-time across all platforms, genres, and decades of video game history.

Super Mario Odyssey

You may think this is mostly due so far to the lack of reviews, but there are already a total of 56 reviews accounted for on OpenCritic and 31 on Game Rankings, including Game Revolution’s own masterful review. For reference, Breath of the Wild has 111 reviews on OpenCritic and 62 on Game Rankings respectively, so this could potentially change in the future.

As for major aggregate site Metacritic, Super Mario Odyssey stands at an aggregate score of 97, tied for fifth place on its list of best reviewed games with several giants, including both Galaxy games, Grand Theft Auto V, Metroid Prime, Halo: Combat Evolved, and the aforementioned Breath of the Wild.

Opinion: This is great news for Switch owners and myself personally. The last game I got was Super Mario 3D Land on 3DS and, before that, 64. 3D Mario’s are my favorite, and it really feels like Odyssey was made for people like me. I’m more than four Kingdoms into the game and loving it so far. It’s no surprise then that other people are as well.
