Cyberpunk 2077 delay rumor cover

Cyberpunk 2077 delay due to Xbox One’s ‘unsatisfactory’ performance, insider claims

Less than a week ago, we got the unfortunate news that there was going to be a Cyberpunk 2077 delay. Now, a Polish industry insider named Borys Niespielak is claiming that the delayed launch of Cyberpunk 2077 is largely because the Xbox One just couldn’t handle the game.

Let’s rewind a bit to a week ago: CD Projekt RED pushed back Cyberpunk 2077 from April 2020 to September 2020 to focus on “playtesting, fixing[,] and polishing.” Considering the scale of the game, it’s an understandable move on the Polish company’s part. However, an industry insider has claimed that this isn’t the only reason that there’s a Cyberpunk 2077 delay.

As ResetEra highlights, an article over at AltChar describes the content of a Polish-language podcast featuring Mr. Niespielak. In said podcast, Mr. Niespielak states that the Xbox One just wasn’t powerful enough to run the game in its current state. Furthermore, he said that sources confirmed to him that there was a deadline of January 2020 to get the game up to snuff on Microsoft’s console. If they couldn’t hit it — which they apparently didn’t, if this information is true — they would have to ultimately delay the release of the game.

That’s not the only information Borys Niespielak discusses. He also states that the main questline was only finished three months ago and that the quest team was largely focusing on side quests now that the core story is all wrapped up.

If Borys Niespielak is correct, then it seems that the delay comes down to a lack of horsepower on the current generation of consoles. While Polish gamers appear to regard his opinion on inside information as highly as we do with Jason Schreier in the West, we haven’t been able to independently verify any of these claims.

As always, take these claims with a grain of salt, and be thankful that you don’t have to contend with Cyberpunk 2077, the Resident Evil 3 remake, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake all in the same month.
