Gears of War can get a bad rap when it comes to the series’ narrative. Although it can be easy to dismiss as dudebro schlock, there’s often more to it if you scratch just beneath the surface. That might be why you’re curious to learn about when Gears Tactics takes place, so, stick with this guide for everything you need to know on the Gears Tactics timeline.
Gears Tactics Timeline | When is it set?
Gears of War Tactics presents a couple of franchise firsts; this spin-off is the debut strategy game in the series, but also the first title to prioritize a PC launch. Those diving in for the first time via either Steam or Windows 10 — the latter of which is available at no extra cost to active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers — thankfully won’t find themselves lost, as Gears Tactics is a prequel.
Set 12 years before the original Gears of War, Gears Tactics showcases humanity’s first contact with the beastly Locust Horde. Fans have long been clamoring to experience the infamous events of Emergence Day (E-Day) alluded to in previous games, and now the time has finally come.
You play as Gabe Diaz, a “defiant” soldier that leads a customizable squad of survivors as the last hope for humankind. Throughout the campaign, your main goal is to hunt and eliminate Ukkon, the fearsome leader of the Locust army. Ukkon is responsible for making all manner of monsters, though will stopping him be enough to quell the Locust threat completely?
The Coalition and Xbox Game Studios describe the single-player strategy prequel as “immersive and character-driven,” further elaborating to state that it’s a “journey of leadership, survival, and sacrifice.” One thing’s for sure, though: the Gears Tactics timeline places it right at the beginning where Gears of War video games are concerned.
