How to fix PS5 randomly turning on by itself

Some users’ PS5 consoles have been switching themselves on seemingly at random. Although it can be concerning to see a PlayStation 5 console powering on by itself, it’s usually nothing to worry about. Owners can generally fix the problem with their PS5 randomly turning on via the system settings menu.

PS5 consoles switch themselves on when users activate the “Enable HDMI Device Link” system setting. To disable this option, navigate to Settings > System > HDMI > Enable HDMI Device Link from the PlayStation 5 home screen. Switching the toggle to the left side will stop the PS5 from randomly turning on by itself.

With this option turned on, booting up the TV and/or any additional connected devices may also power the PlayStation 5. Although this can be convenient when players are looking to use the device, if that isn’t the case, it’s more of a headache. For the sake of a few extra seconds, in most cases, it’s best to deactivate HDMI-CEC on PS5.

Users that leave their PlayStation 5 console in Rest Mode might mistake the console spinning up for it switching itself on. In reality, however, that isn’t the case. Rest Mode allows the PS5 console to install updates and it’s natural for the system to start making noises when downloads are happening. If the light on the console remains orange, rather than turning blue, then the machine has not turned on.

In theory, it’s also possible to power on a PS5 mistakenly by using the PlayStation App for iOS and Android. This would be somewhat difficult to do, though make sure to fully close the mobile application after using it just in case.

A new PS5 system update just dropped, introducing some exciting new features. It’s now possible to store next-gen games on external drives, and even to play PS5 games on PS4 via Share Play.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is also available to download at no cost to PS Plus subscribers on PS5. Here’s the GameRevolution review.
