Back 4 Blood Open Beta: Can you unlock more characters and monster variations?

Back 4 Blood: How to unlock more characters

A big part of the Back 4 Blood experience is getting to know each Cleaner and Ridden. Of course, since it’s an asymmetrical action game, the best strategies are based on the strengths and weaknesses of each character. However, not all playable characters are included right from the start. Here’s what you’ll need to do to unlock more characters in Back 4 Blood.

How to unlock more characters in Back 4 Blood

Can you unlock more characters or monsters in the Back 4 Blood open beta?

When you begin Back 4 Blood, you’ll only have access to four Cleaners. To unlock more characters, you’ll need to finish Act One. At the end of Act One, you’ll see a cutscene that will unlock Doc, Hoffman, Jim, and Karlee.

To put it another way, you don’t need to worry about seeking out other Cleaners. You’ll come across them naturally as you play Back 4 Blood, as they’re meant to be part of the campaign. You can’t miss them.

Still, you will have to put in some work before you can unlock more than the default four characters. Holly, Mom, Evangelo, and Walker are all available from the start, but the remaining four cleaners won’t unlock until you complete The Sound of Thunder, the final mission in Act One. Getting there will take some time. Plus, you will need to jump online for the final mission in order for them to unlock properly.

Fortunately, those first few hours in Back 4 Blood will introduce you to how the Cleaners can work as a group. Your character choice doesn’t matter near as much as your overall strategy, which is why it’s important to focus on getting to know the starting Cleaners first. By the end of Act One, you’ll be ready to try out a few new characters.

It’s worth mentioning that you can’t change characters on the fly. Switching out your Cleaners will effectively create a new run, so be sure to make the most out of your current run while you still can.
