Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 5 featured the return of the Grand Inquisitor, who was presumed dead after Reva seemed to kill him with a lightsaber earlier in the series. But with the character now returned to his place by Darth Vader’s side heading up the hunt for the Jedi, this has left viewers wondering: how is he still alive and how exactly did he survive the seemingly fatal attack?

How did the Grand Inquisitor survive in Kenobi?
The Grand Inquisitor likely survived as a result of his race having two stomachs. While a relatively obscure bit of Star Wars trivia, the Pau’ans having two stomachs rather than one has previously been raised by fans as the reason behind his survival. This was also referenced by the Grand Inquisitor’s actor, Rupert Friend, who kind of spoiled episode 5’s revelation on an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
During the talk show, after Kimmel discussed the Grand Inquisitor being stabbed through the stomach, Friend replied that the lightsaber only made its way “through one of them.” The actor then proceeded to dodge further questioning, suggesting to fans that the character would make his return.
Of course, fans had already speculated that the Grand Inquisitor wasn’t really dead anyway, given that in the canonical Star Wars timeline he later appears during the events of Rebels. While his “death” looked pretty convincing, leading some to even speculate that there were two Pau’an Grand Inquisitors, it’s now been made clear that he likely had a spell in the Bacta tank and is now back to working order.
His having two stomachs isn’t addressed in Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 5, with him only briefly appearing at the end of the episode after Vader takes down Reva. It seems the Grand Inquisitor enacted his revenge on the Third Sister by letting Vader know of Reva’s action, even though the pair unwisely still leave her alive.
